Stress in the Workplace
Stress in the Workplace is on the rise again. It doesnÕt take a genius to figure out the reasons behind this recent surge. Rising unemployment and increased workload do tend to make a volatile combination, after all.
Many people have reported increased stress levels at work, and the trend is set to continue well into the foreseeable future. Globally, employers are reducing headcount by as much as 20% across the board, and the lucky survivors of the pruning exercises are expected to take on the workload of their departed colleagues. This does not make for pretty viewing.
It is difficult to find work environments where everybody can honestly claim to be content and stress free. It seems that in this day and age, working in a stressful environment is par for the course. That is a real shame.
Allegedly, and I use that in the loosest sense of the term, there are over ten causes of workplace stress. Who would have thought that? Many people are inclined to believe that work overload is the only contributory factor to stress in the workplace.
Work overload is indeed the greatest cause of workplace stress, but it is far from the only culprit. Here are a few others factors that can contribute to stress in the workplace.
1. Lack of feedback: People expect to be told how well they are performing at work. It doesnÕt matter whether the feedback is good or bad, as long as the feedback is forthcoming. Lack of feedback can be remedied by written or verbal feedback that is personalized for each recipient.
2. Lack of control: Employees like to feel in control of their destiny, even when they so clearly arenÕt. When people feel they have no say in the matters that affect them, their stress levels begin to rise. A typical example is moving an employee to a different floor without discussing the move with them.
3.Lack of appreciation: Productivity suffers a great deal when employees do not feel valued by their employers. A little appreciation goes a long way towards reducing stress in the workplace. This can easily be remedied by making sincere and heartfelt comments about an employeeÕs contributions at work.
4. Frequent Interruptions: This is the 21st century, and employees are expected to carry mobile phones, pagers and email clients around with us Ð twenty-four hours a day. Not only thatÉ they are also expected to stop whatever they are doing and respond to these interfering devices each time the devices go into a vibrating frenzy.
There are many other factors that can cause workplace stressÉ as evidenced by the few discussed above, stress in the workplace is not as cut and dried as many would like to think.
Getting your stress levels under control within your place of work is not only possible but completely achievable.
